How our words can shape environmental action

October 9, 2023
Within the vast sphere of sustainability, words don’t merely act as messengers; they dynamically sculpt our perception of reality.

Language—and its intricate interplay with our cognition—has been the subject of intrigue for philosophers, linguists, and sociologists for centuries. As many experts have surmised, words serve as more than functional tools; they hold the profound power to define and redefine our comprehension of the world.

Given the exigent urgency of the global sustainability challenge, it’s paramount that we deeply introspect the narratives we create and propagate.

Many of us, wrapped in the cadence of our daily routines, spend a considerable chunk of our lives ensconced within the four walls of our workplaces. These spaces, replete with their own unique dynamics, cultures, and lexicons, continually mould our perspectives, values, and actions.

Within these realms, the vocabulary that permeates discussions, decisions, and deliberations becomes emblematic of the underlying ethos. For many businesses, the relentless drumbeat of words like ‘disruption,’ ‘scalability,’ and ‘innovation’ has become nearly ritualistic.

Although these words resonate with ambition and forward momentum, they may, at times, inadvertently foster a worldview of insatiable consumption, competitiveness, and a predilection for short-term rewards; often sidelining the pressing imperatives of environmental and ecological health.

Contrast this with the resounding call for sustainability—a movement that necessitates a narrative architected around principles of balance, symbiosis, and a farsighted vision for the planet and its myriad inhabitants.

To champion such a monumental shift in collective consciousness, there’s a palpable need to refine our lexicon. To select words that promote harmony, mutualism, and respect.

For the majority of modern history, our relationship with nature has oscillated between reverence and exploitation.

Our technological advances, while a testament to human ingenuity, have often been accompanied by a narrative of dominance and subjugation of nature—and people.

Standing at the precipice of irreversible ecological change, there’s an urgency to weave pathways that counter this; that are regenerative in essence. Yet embracing this ethos entails more than mere physical endeavours. It demands a profound shift in our collective psyche and the vocabulary that articulates our aspirations.

Ancient cultures and civilizations possessed an astonishingly nuanced vocabulary, deeply embedded in the rhythms of nature. We still see this today, reflected in Indigenous communities who’s timeless wisdom and languages seamlessly integrate the concepts of unity, coexistence, and the delicate balance of life.

By drawing inspiration from such lexicons and reinvigorating our modern vocabularies with such profound insights, we stand to shift our language towards interconnectedness; a lingual tapestry that paints a world of interdependence.

It feels like the burgeoning awareness around environmental concerns is subtly, yet assuredly, ushering in linguistic shifts. Terms like ‘sustainable development,’ ‘biodiversity,’ ‘renewable energy,’ and ‘ecological balance’ have seeped into mainstream ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) discourse, even if we’ve only moved from one acronym to another.

While these terminologies help demystify complex ecological concepts for the masses, the real challenge remains: ensuring they transcend their novelty, evolve beyond mere buzzwords, and crystallise into terms of genuine understanding, respect, and commitment.

We should recognise that recrafting our sustainability narrative isn’t purely an intellectual pursuit; it’s a profound moral and existential imperative. Our words have transformative potential—In their cadence, in their resonance, and in their depth lies an unparalleled power.

This power to not only eloquently articulate the beauty and challenges of our world but, more vitally, to metamorphose it for posterity.
